Welcome to Loftus Dolphins

Loftus Dolphin swimmer, 13 year old Charlotte (Lottie) Thompson, collected a bronze medal in the Swim England Summer Championships at Ponds Forge in her first ever National meet. Lottie was the last of the 5 Loftus swimmers to compete in the week and said she was ‘nervous but excited’ to be there. The final proved to be a fast race and Lottie had to fight hard down the last 50M but she showed her usual grit and determination to pull it out of the bag, very narrowly missing silver and swimming a personal best time plus a new club record as well. The other 4 swimmers from Loftus competing in the same championships also put in very creditable performances. Out of 10 events they managed to reach the finals in 9 swims. Maia Hall finished in 3rd place in the 200 IM, Henry Hickson made the final of all 3 of his Backstroke events achieving personal best times in 2 of them. Hannah Trowsdale similarly followed up her success the week before in the British Championships with finals in 50 & 100M Fly and in 50M Freestyle where she just missed out on a bronze medal with a 4th place and had 2 Pb’s. Sean Armstrong, who has been plagued by injury for most of the season nevertheless got to the 50M Breaststroke final in a personal best time. The swimmers now have a well earned 3 week break before coming back to start the whole process again ready for next season

Maia Hall became British Champion in 50M Breaststroke at the British Summer Chamiponships held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. Maia, who has been a member of the club since the age of 9, has won many honours including County and Regional Championship golds and last year was selected for British Swimming’s phase 2 Talent Camp. She has competed in the British and ASA Summer Championships for the past 3 years. This year Maia competed in 50, 100 & 200M Breaststroke making all 3 finals. She achieved personal best times in both the 100 where she finished 4th and the 50 where, having qualified in 2nd place for the final went one better to take the gold medal and the title of ‘British Champion’. Coaches and team mates at the club, some of whom are themselves in training for the English Championships next week, took time out of the pool to watch her races on various phones and tablets on poolside, cheering and encouraging Maia on. A fantastic achievement for Maia and all the swimmers who have trained with and helped her over the past 5 years. Maia now leaves the club to pursue her swimming dreams and we wish her every success.

In the same Championships Hannah Trowsdale competed in 100M Freestyle. This was Hannah’s first British Championship so she was delighted to achieve a new best time of 59.14. However that new time was equalled by Katie Laybourn of Hartlepool so the 2 had a swim off for a reserve place. Katie narrowly pipped Hannah to the finish but the Loftus girl was very happy to have gone under 59 seconds for the first time with a time of 58.75. Hannah now goes into the English Nationals full of confidence for her other 3 swims next week alongside Lottie Thompson, Henry Hickson and Sean Armstrong.
