Club members Charlotte Thompson and Maia Hall have been selected to attend Phase 1 and Phase 2 camps respectively as part of the England Talent Development Programme. Lottie has already attended one of the two days involved in her programme where she worked under Fred Furniss, England Talent Development Coach, concentrating on starts and turns plus dry land work and learning about what it means to become an international swimmer. She will shortly be completing the 2nd day which is an Education Day including a series of workshops designed to further the swimmers’ understanding of many other aspects of their sport.
The Phase 2 camp for Maia is a 3 day programme aimed at enhancing the swimmers best stroke and involves a series of swimming, land training and education sessions aimed at mastering outstanding skills to take them forward into their next phase of training and also involves screening and assessment of technical ability. The swimmers spend 3 days at the International Pool in Sheffield where they will participate in 2 swim sessions per day plus strength work and lectures on subjects such as nutrition and injury prevention.
Both girls have been selected due to their achievements over the past year which include medals in several events at County and Regional competition. Maia also made finals in the National Swimming Championships, a feat which Charlotte is looking to emulate this year. This is the first time that the club has had swimmers selected for England Talent Camps. The girls only train for ten hours a week and were up against some swimmers from other clubs who have at least 50% more training time which makes their achievement even more remarkable and is a testament to the hard work and effort they and their coaches put in on a daily basis.
